The Keep It Clean Campaign began in Boulder County as a countywide water awareness campaign that has now been adopted by the state of Colorado. This multimedia program was designed to increase awareness of the public´s role and responsibility in maintaining clean water. It emphasized how our daily activities affect water quality such as fertilizer use, car washing, car maintenance, and dog waste. ECA´s public awareness campaign included public signage, radio, direct mail, newspaper ads, educational curricula, school programs, and creating templates for the municipalities to adjust into a multitude of outreach pieces. The centerpiece of the program was the creation of a water quality mascot, "H2O Jo and Flo"– award winning animated characters. H2O Jo and Flo carried messages about the importance of clean water and actions everyone can do.
The Keep It Clean program began in 2003 and has since been adopted statewide in Colorado. It has provided a foundation for communicating water issues to the public in a serious yet approachable manner. The program continues to be highly impactful. In 2007, this program won the EPA´s Environmental Achievement Award. This award recognizes significant achievements in the protection of public health or the environment and in advancing the agency’s strategic goals.
